Symptoms of hydrocele
- Painless swelling of one or both sides of the scrotum
- A feeling of heaviness or dragging
- Swelling that may be smaller in the morning and bigger later in the day
- Discomfort while walking, sitting or during sex when it is large
Causes
- In adults, fluid can build up because of injury, infection or inflammation of the testicle or epididymis.
- In Bihar, filariasis (spread by mosquitoes) is an important cause of hydrocele.
- In newborn boys, a hydrocele is common and often goes away on its own within the first year or two.
Not every scrotal swelling is a hydrocele. A hernia, infection, twisted testicle (torsion) or tumour can look similar. Sudden severe pain in the testicle is an emergency — go to a hospital immediately. Any new swelling should be examined by a doctor.
Hydrocele treatment at Tarun Clinic
- Private examination to confirm it is a hydrocele and rule out other causes. An ultrasound may be advised.
- Treatment of the cause — for example infection or inflammation — with Ayurvedic medicines where suitable.
- Relief of discomfort — scrotal support, rest and advice.
- Testing for filariasis where relevant, as treating it is important for you and your family.
- Honest advice on surgery. Small hydroceles that do not bother you can often simply be watched. Large or growing hydroceles usually need a minor surgical procedure to remove the fluid permanently — if that applies to you, the doctor will tell you clearly and guide you.
Frequently asked questions
Can hydrocele be treated without operation?
Small hydroceles, and those caused by a temporary infection or inflammation, may settle with treatment of the cause or may simply be monitored. Large, long-standing hydroceles usually need a minor operation for a permanent result. The doctor will examine you and advise honestly.
Is hydrocele dangerous?
A hydrocele itself is usually harmless. But a swelling in the scrotum should always be checked to make sure it is not a hernia or another condition.
Does hydrocele affect fertility?
A simple hydrocele usually does not affect fertility. Very large hydroceles may cause discomfort that affects sexual life.
